Hmmm… Almost sounds to good to be true, so I had to try it out.

You’ll have to add a PayPal account or a credit card to your account. I used PayPal, but removed my info after the registration was complete.

Step 7

Confirm your order for a free domain. Turn off Automatic SafeRenew if you’re sure you wont be renewing the domain with Register.com.

Step 8

The order is complete. You’ll receive a confirmation by email after a short while.

Step 9

You can now log in to your account to setup DNS and name servers. I also went ahead and removed my PayPal info (from My Wallet). I also removed Register.com’s billing authorization at PayPal (Profile - Financial Information - Pay List).

The domain is now yours. After 1 year the domain will be up for renewal. Register.com charges $35/year for renewals which is quite expensive. You can either let the domain expire, or you can move the domain to another registrar beforehand.

Remember according to ICANN rules you can not transfer a domain the first 60 days after a domain registration, domain renewal or domain transfer, and you can not transfer a domain the last 5-7 days before a domain renewal.

If you don’t want to renew with Register.com I recommend you take a look at either GoDaddy or Namecheap.
