This post will show you how to register a free domain with Register.com. After the first year the domain will renew for $35/year, but you’re free to move the domain to cheaper registrar (I recommend GoDaddy or Namecheap) or let it expire.
I received the following email from Register.com today:
To: mail@promo-code.net
From: Register.com
Subject: Get a FREE domain from Register.comI’m excited to tell you about an extraordinary offer for small businesses from Register.com. For a limited time, you can register a new domain name for your business FREE for the first year - a $35 value (Limit one per business).
There are no strings attached to this offer. It is simply our way of introducing you to the award-winning and affordable services available from Register.com.
We’re confident that once you’ve experienced our products and services for yourself, you’ll want to partner with us for all your website-related needs.
Only .com, .us, .biz, .info, .net, or .org are eligible for free domain registration. Limited to 1 year registration term. May not be combined with any other offer. Expires 1/22/2008. You must be the owner or decision maker for a Small Business to qualify for this offer. Only 1 free domain registration per customer. This offer is subject to the terms and conditions of our Services Agreement, located here.
Hmmm… Almost sounds to good to be true, so I had to try it out.
Step 1
Follow this link to Register.com and search for a domain name.
Step 2
Luckily my domain of choice was available.
Now go ahead on click “Register My Free Domain”.
Step 3
Sign up for a new account. Check the checkbox that says “Check here to certify that you are an owner or a decision maker for a Small Business”. Sure, I’m a decision maker!
Step 4
Complete the account creation by filling out your contact information. I even registered as an Individual, and checked that the domain was for Personal use without any problems.
Step 5
The shopping cart shows a domain registration at $0.00 and a privacy protection at $9.00. Go ahead and remove the privacy protection and the total will be $0.00.
Step 6
You’ll have to add a PayPal account or a credit card to your account. I used PayPal, but removed my info after the registration was complete.
Step 7
Confirm your order for a free domain. Turn off Automatic SafeRenew if you’re sure you wont be renewing the domain with Register.com.
Step 8
The order is complete. You’ll receive a confirmation by email after a short while.
Step 9
You can now log in to your account to setup DNS and name servers. I also went ahead and removed my PayPal info (from My Wallet). I also removed Register.com’s billing authorization at PayPal (Profile - Financial Information - Pay List).
The domain is now yours. After 1 year the domain will be up for renewal. Register.com charges $35/year for renewals which is quite expensive. You can either let the domain expire, or you can move the domain to another registrar beforehand.
Remember according to ICANN rules you can not transfer a domain the first 60 days after a domain registration, domain renewal or domain transfer, and you can not transfer a domain the last 5-7 days before a domain renewal.
If you don’t want to renew with Register.com I recommend you take a look at either GoDaddy or Namecheap.
